The Saints came to play football today but our boys were ready. With a slow start in freezing and muddy conditions they started to get to the ball first and then the intensity picked up. There was some good marks and strong tackles that were rewarded with goals, however some dropped marks cost us goals too. The boys run out of steam in the last quarter with the run stopping but they managed to grind it out and sing the song in the end.

Firstly I apologise for arriving late this morning, putting the boys on the back foot. Thank you to the parents that stepped in and got the boys ready. The boys had a reasonable start to the game however could not maintain it throughout. We played well in patches with some boys attacking the ball breaking the lines and taking the game on. There was some good passages of play where we used the ball to advantage, unfortunately it was not maintained. We made bad decisions with our kicking, not taking simple marks that put us under pressure. It was the basic skills that let us down today. Something that we still have to work on during training and the boys to concentrate on. It was a hard game and the boys would have been tired with no substitutions which showed in the last quarter.

Wow, what a game. First to the ball, intensity, tackling pressure, marking (maybe mark of the year for Mitchell) and helping each other out. Everything the coaches ask of the boys each week..... they delivered. A full four quarter effort in trying conditions, well done boys

Sometimes when you play a well drilled team like Sorrento Duncraig Lions you need a bit of luck to go your way, but today it wasn't to be. Two great quarters of football and two not so great from the boys today. The oppositions forward pressure was relentless and some dropped marks in our back line at critical times made the task even harder trying to get the ball out of there down to our forwards. The boys showed their true character though, never giving up in the last quarter by winning the ball and peppering the goals.

Today's game was a much improved performance by the boys. It was a sold team effort from all the boys. They played as a team and worked for each other. We got to the ball first and then used the ball well by hand balling to a team mate giving them first opportunity. Our run, tackling and marking was much improved.
The biggest thing I think the boys will take out of the game was they had the team spirit and gelled well. Hopefully they can carry that through the rest of the season and improve on other aspects of the game. I am proud of how the boys responded after the last couple of weeks.
All the boys played well and new recruit Kristian slotted in well with the team.

Its been a tough few weeks for the boys, the oppostition had been hard at the ball and running hard. It's still a little frustrating seeing the team get to the ball first but having trouble clearing it out. There were some good passages of fast ball movement down to our goals however we couldnt capitalise on these opportunities.
The boys put in a good effort in the trying conditions so they can still hold their heads high. Hopefully that hunger for the ball will return and they will be rewarded.

This week we had a tough derby against the Cate. The wet conditions introduced different skills required to remain competitive. We struggled kicking out of goals in the first quarter then improved in the remainder of the game by kitting targets out wide. It was frustrating at times when we were able to get first to the ball but not being able to get down low and clear the ball out to win the contest.
Stephan captained the team with a strong performance in the forward line. Brooklyn defended well taking crucial marks in the back line. Denver provided run through the middle taking on some heavy tackles after a welcomed return from injury.
Enjoy the long weekend boys and hope we come back fresh and energized after the break.

Sunday's game against Sorrento Duncraig Dolphins was unfortunately not the best game. The boys looked flat footed, no hunger for the ball and overall just looked tired. We were second to the ball, didn't take marks and just couldn't get going in all aspects of the game. Sorrento had a day out and played as a team and were terrific. There were a couple of boys that stood out which kept us going. Unfortunately we were unable to kick straight in front of goal. The boys will learn from the game and move forward together as a team.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mums. What a game today was. This game was the boys hardest test to date and they can walk away holding their heads up high. The boys played with heart and great intensity! Most importantly they all played a part as a TEAM. Well done boys! Looking forward to training as we can work on the little things that will better our play in many ways.

Today against Kingsway was a game where we started off slow, flat footed, second to the ball and we seemed to have no hunger for the ball resulting with a bad first quarter. However, take nothing away from Kingsway, who had a great first half with their pressure and ball use not allowing the our boys to get going. We slowly worked our way back into the game with our tackling and good defense from all the boys with James and Ben taking marks and interceptions at crucial times in the second and third quarters. The boys responded to what was asked of them and I thought we had an exceptional last quarter with hard work, tackling and good ball use to give our forwards an advantage. As you saw today being first to the ball and playing in front pays off as Callum had a great quarter doing those things, taking marks and finishing off in front of goals, which rewards the team. Also good to see was when it all came together and worked out, all the boys went to their teammates and gave them hi fives and celebrated together. I'm proud of the boys at their persistence all game that allowed them to stay in the game and then run over the top of a good hard Kingways team that came to play and made it hard for our boys . Thanks to all the parents and family that came down to watch the boys and support the Kingsley Lions, I'm sure the boys appreciate the support and it's great to see the team spirit. WELL DONE!

It was a great result for the boys today for their first game of the season. We were a bit sloppy with our tackles in the first quarter but were able to improve this skill over the journey of the game. It was pleasing to see set plays with a few clean linkages resulting in goals. I also noticed that the boys have matured from last season with great communication on field discussing how to adapt to the opposition’s tactics. The team was well lead by Sam and great courage was shown by Liam who put his body on the line to cause a turnover in our back line. Well done to all the boys today for great intensity over the four quarters and a big thank you to the parents and guardians for coming along to support the MIGHTY KINGSLEY LIONS!
